GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS

  1. Rules in the provincial syllabus apply, unless modified by a Dauphin ArtsFest rule and indicated below.

  2. The Provincial Marking System will be in effect and a certified adjudicator will be judging and marking your performance. Unless otherwise posted, our adjudicated performances will be non-competitive and therefore we will NOT have awards (i.e. First place, Second place, Third place). In other words, you are competing against yourself in an attempt to get the highest possible mark and (if you want) trying to secure a spot for the provincial adjudicated competition. As our motto says: BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOU! Work hard, try harder and have fun while doing it!

    GRADING            MARK                                   PERFORMANCE STANDARD
    A+                          90-100%                               signifies superior performance
    A                             85-89%                                 signifies distinction
    A-                           80-84%                                 signifies definite merit
    B                             75-79%                                 signifies fair standard
    C                             70-74%                                 signifies adequate

  3. Participant may enter competition at:
    Piano:                   Beginner
    Band:                    Beginner 1
Dance:                  No age or limit level

  4. Each performer must provide an original copy of his/her selection (test piece or own choice) for the adjudicator’s secretary before the announcement of each group. We do this so the adjudicator can ‘read along’ and provide you with better feedback and keep the marking fair and in the best interest of the performer.

  5. All copyrights regarding music or other copyright protected materials must be observed. This is a biggie for us, as we respect the original work of composers and distributors. In the event that you provide the adjudicator with a copy of your own choice selection, you must clearly mark this on each page.

  6. Dance performances that depict violence, promote the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs or are sexually explicit are not allowed.

  7. If you get your family or friends to record your performance (including photography) we ask you to do this unobtrusively and quietly. We’d love you to share your own videos and images, and if you do, use the hashtag #dauphinartsfest. Just make sure you value the privacy of others and we reserve the right to refuse access to the auditorium to anyone not respecting the rules.

  8. The decision of the adjudicator is final. At no time should you approach the adjudicator to discuss your performance. If you are not satisfied with your mark, you can contact Dauphin ArtsFest in writing by sending a message via our website www.dauphinartsfest.com

  9. At the time of writing, we are not sure of possible scholarships or individual awards. In the event that we do introduce scholarships or awards, recipients are chosen by the adjudicator. This also applies to those chosen to perform at the final performance on Saturday night.

    PIANO and POPULAR PIANO

  1. For the performance we are using the Watson Arts Centre’s grand piano. Unfortunately you will not be able to practice on the piano at the day of the adjudication. Please refer to our online schedule for rehearsal times earlier in the week at www.dauphinartsfest.com

  2. Participants in Grade 3 or higher are eligible for the Provincial Competition. Details regarding the Provincial Competition are explained in the Provincial Syllabus. Performers must chose a class eligible for the Provincial Competition, marked in the Syllabus with a letter ‘P’. Candidates for the Provincial Competition are chosen upon recommendation for the adjudicator.

  3. Make sure to use the correct Class Number on your application form with a clear description of the name of the piece/movement and the composer/creator.

  4. If you include elements of IMPROVISATION or an EXACT SCORE in your selection, please indicate so clearly on your registration form. It is possible that pieces with improvisation are grouped separately from the exact scores and regular piano entries.
